A cold blustery Colorado Winter day is here with temps near 1degree F, last night. Expecting 1 inch of snow in the foothills was forecast.
Today we want to discuss "Plastic Bags" used by grocery and retail stores around town. In Northern Colorado many stores give plastic bags out to their customers after a purchase. The problem with these bags is numerous. From polluting the landfills, blowing in the skies, killing wildlife, and the unsustainable use of oil/fossil fuel in the manufacture of plastic bags, little doubt remians as to their damage to our environment.
Whole Foods, a Green Grocer, and leader in the green movement in Colorado has banned plastic bag use in its grocery stores. Why can't the cities of Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, and Greeley do the same in their grocery and retail stores in Northern Colorado? Cities often argue it will hurt sales of their products, actually this has not been proven, the opposite is true. No decline in sales occurs! The question is do we want easy pollution riddled shopping or sustainable green shopping?
Bottom line the solution is simple! People must bring their own cloth bags when they shop. Walmart offers cloth reusable bags to its customers for .25cents a bag in its stores. So this can be done! No matter what you are shopping for cloth bags work! Time for other stores to follow the leaders and prohibit plastic bags. By-the-way 25cents a bag is a much more reasonable price, than the over-priced $1 Dollar a cloth bag, stores are charging. Lets make less corporate profit, charge less, and help our environment with these cloth bags! Colorado Green News is taking donations to buy 50,000 cloth bags and give them out free to shoppers! Your donations would help in this process, just visit our website and donate.(www.coloradogreennews.com)
Let the city know what you think!!!!!!!!! Contact the city you live in, or Larimer County. Where do you stand on this issue? Can you make a small sacrifice for a greater difference? This is what lies at the heart of the sustainable green movement!
Is it time to make it a referendum and get plastic bags banned in Larimer County? Can we place it on the ballots for our Fall elections in Northern Colorado cities and let the people decide? We will need signatures! Anyone interested out there to help our Green cause?
