Snowy owls soar south from Arctic in rare mass migration

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - Bird enthusiasts are reporting rising numbers of snowy owls from the Arctic winging into the lower 48 states this winter in a mass southern migration that a leading owl researcher called "unbelievable."
Thousands of the snow-white birds, which stand 2 feet tall with 5-foot wingspans, have been spotted from coast to coast, feeding in farmlands in Idaho, roosting on rooftops in Montana, gliding over golf courses in Missouri and soaring over shorelines in Massachusetts.
A certain number of the iconic owls fly south from their Arctic breeding grounds each winter but rarely do so many venture so far away even amid large-scale, periodic southern migrations known as irruptions.
"What we're seeing now -- it's unbelievable," said Denver Holt, head of the Owl Research Institute in Montana.
"This is the most significant wildlife event in decades," added Holt, who has studied snowy owls in their Arctic tundra ecosystem for two decades.
Holt and other owl experts say the phenomenon is likely linked to lemmings, a rodent that accounts for 90 percent of the diet of snowy owls during breeding months that stretch from May into September. The largely nocturnal birds also prey on a host of other animals, from voles to geese.
An especially plentiful supply of lemmings last season likely led to a population boom among owls that resulted in each breeding pair hatching as many as seven offspring. That compares to a typical clutch size of no more than two, Holt said.
Greater competition this year for food in the Far North by the booming bird population may have then driven mostly younger, male owls much farther south than normal.
Research on the animals is scarce because of the remoteness and extreme conditions of the terrain the owls occupy, including northern Russia and Scandinavia, he said.
The surge in snowy owl sightings has brought birders flocking from Texas, Arizona and Utah to the Northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest, pouring tourist dollars into local economies and crowding parks and wildlife areas. The irruption has triggered widespread public fascination that appears to span ages and interests.
"For the last couple months, every other visitor asks if we've seen a snowy owl today," said Frances Tanaka, a volunteer for the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge northeast of Olympia, Washington.
But accounts of emaciated owls at some sites -- including a food-starved bird that dropped dead in a farmer's field in Wisconsin -- suggest the migration has a darker side. And Holt said an owl that landed at an airport in Hawaii in November was shot and killed to avoid collisions with planes.
He said snowy owl populations are believed to be in an overall decline, possibly because a changing climate has lessened the abundance of vegetation like grasses that lemmings rely on.
This winter's snowy owl outbreak, with multiple sightings as far south as Oklahoma, remains largely a mystery of nature.
"There's a lot of speculation. As far as hard evidence, we really don't know," Holt said.

Colorado Green News supports the addition of the 28th Amendment to the US Constitution: The right to a green sustainable America shall not be denied to our citizens. We hold these truths self evident, and a green sustainable America is as important as Life, Liberty, Freedom and the Pursuit of Happiness for without a green sustainable America all other rights are meaningless..

Our closest cosmic neighbor the Moon is a great example of how unsustainable cosmic practices influenced its outcome. Earth bound skeptics need just take a short stay on the Moon to see up close how unsustainable, anti-green thinking works!    Barren Death is the final outcome!  Now you get it? While this scenario would seem far-fetched it speaks volumes about how those who are still involved in unsustainable practices and old fossil fuel use need to wake-up and smell the coffee....time grows short

So what other ways can the US Government move to add more renewable energy resources and jobs to our economy? How can we lower costs on solar panels to make it more attractive to consumers? Need some participation here please?

If the future largest Wind Farm in America is reportedly slated for Wyoming. Why haven't Colorado cities like Fort Collins, Steamboat, and others contacted it to purchase renewable energy from wind power? One of the largest green house CO2 polluters in Northern Colorado is the Rawhide Power Plant. Fort Collins like Boulder, Colorado has an opportunity to provide its citizens with a renewable energy source. Isn't it time we left the old fossil fuel power plants behind? Fort Collins could possibly now offer utility power to its citizens from a clean energy resource. The question remains how progressive is the City of Fort Collins and its citizens? Can it go toe to toe with Boulder into a green future?
President Obama acts helping OUR green future. The DEFEAT of the Keystone XL Pipeline is a major defeat and a very positive stride towards a renewable energy policy in the US. TransCanada Corporation has multiple Natural Gas Pipelines that cross the US border from Canada. The Keystone XL Pipeline would be their first Oil  pipeline in the states. It would run from Alberta to Houston  and cross waterways and many states that do not want it. Alberta crude is dirty and thick which would create a massive problem if spilled. Untold animal and land pollution. Do we really want to let a company that is new with oil pipelines learn in the US? We need to promote renewable technology which would create more jobs and keep the US competitive with China and Germany.

So its Monday again time for some new Green Thinking. What are you doing today to make your home more Green? Anyone start composting their kitchen wastes?  Just replaced light bulbs  and working on a 100% land fill option for the house. Started to low the heat setting to 64F during the day which is kool for Colorado. Let us know what you are doing. Also considering a xeriscape portion of the landscape for the Spring will update you all on that process. Been pricing solar cells and programs offered by the state to add solar heating for the water heater. Geo-Thermal would be better but it costs lots.  Have agreat Monday!!!!!!!!!!!

So its Friday the 13th time to make it an extra special sustainable day! Still trying to get counts of plastic bag use by city but no luck. Also how do shoppers deal with no access to those plastic bags, in other-words what can be done to make it a smooth transition to a plastic bag-less shopping experience?

Where can one purchase cloth bags at around 10cents a piece, anyone have an idea for resources? Oh well send me the info if you can, have a lucky and safe weekend.

Saw some plastic bags flying by in the wind yesterday, as it was windy here in Colorado. Wonder what the bird that almost flew into it thought? I thought.... we need to do a better job and prohibit these plastic bags.

A cold blustery Colorado Winter day is here with temps near 1degree F, last night. Expecting 1 inch of snow in the foothills was forecast.

Today we want to discuss "Plastic Bags" used by grocery and retail stores around town. In Northern Colorado many stores give plastic bags out to their customers after a purchase. The problem with these bags is numerous. From polluting the landfills, blowing in the skies,  killing wildlife, and the unsustainable use of oil/fossil fuel in the manufacture of plastic bags, little doubt remians as to their damage to our environment.

Whole Foods, a Green Grocer, and leader in the green movement in Colorado has banned plastic bag use in its grocery stores. Why can't the cities of Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, and Greeley do the same in their grocery and retail stores in Northern Colorado? Cities often argue it will hurt sales of their products, actually this has not been proven, the opposite is true. No decline in sales occurs!  The question is do we want easy pollution riddled shopping or sustainable green shopping?

Bottom line the solution is simple! People must bring their own cloth bags when they shop. Walmart offers cloth reusable bags to its customers for .25cents a bag in its stores. So this can be done! No matter what you are shopping for cloth bags work! Time for other stores to follow the leaders and prohibit plastic bags. By-the-way 25cents a bag is a much more reasonable price, than the over-priced $1 Dollar a cloth bag, stores are charging. Lets make less corporate profit, charge less, and help our environment with these cloth bags!  Colorado Green News is taking donations to buy 50,000 cloth bags and give them out free to shoppers!  Your donations would help in this process, just visit our website and donate.(www.coloradogreennews.com)

Let the city know what you think!!!!!!!!! Contact the city you live in, or Larimer County. Where do you stand on this issue? Can you make a small sacrifice for a greater difference? This is what lies at the heart of the sustainable green movement!

Is it time to make it a referendum and get plastic bags banned in Larimer County? Can we place it on the ballots for our Fall elections in Northern Colorado cities and let the people decide? We will need signatures! Anyone interested out there to help our Green cause?

GREEN QUESTIONS of the WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!  1/10/2012

Canadian Oil Pipeline from Alberta to Houston.

TransCanada Pipeline Corp has multiple natural gas pipelines that cross from Canada into the USA. However, they have no cross-over crude oil pipeline experience transporting oil into the USA. Should we let a corporation that is new at transporting crude oil here jump into it in a big way? Alberta crude oil takes more refining than other crude oil as it is excessively thick and dirty. Is this a smart future energy direction to take?

Our US Government claims only 6,500 jobs will be created for about 2 years if the TransCanada Corporation pipeline is approved. Should we support outdated fossil fuel energy jobs? Instead we could move into the $3 Trillion dollar sustainable and renewable energy future job marketplace. China will take our place in the green energy arena if the US doesn't act soon.

Currently the USA has almost 40,000 business buildings that were built in the 1930s and 1940s. These all need to be retro-fitted for clean efficient energy use. We use almost 40% of our energy consumption in older homes and buildings across America. If the US Government got involved in the building retro-fit conversions thousands of long term jobs would be created.

Citizens should we stop padding the profits of big Oil Companies? Isn't it time to promote clean renewable energy? The White House needs to table this oil pipeline initiative. What do you think?
